Buying a house can be a long and complicated process. You may need to view dozens of houses before you find one that you love. But just because you love a house, it doesn't mean that it is necessarily the best house for you. There are several red flags that home buyers should consider before purchasing a house. You many want to consider walking away if a house has any of the following:
Structural problems in a house can be a huge issue, and they are often quite expensive to repair. If a house that you are looking at has large cracks in the walls, a cracked or damaged foundation, or other signs of structural issues, it is usually in your best interest to move on and find another home that is in better condition.
Home additions can add valuable square footage to a home, but it is important that they are done properly. Unfortunately, many DIY additions completed by homeowners are not done well and may not be up to code. If you are interested in buying a house that has an addition, make sure the seller can provide proof that it was done by a professional and a building permit was issued.
Faulty Electrical Wiring
If you're interested in an older home, find out if the electrical system has been updated. Homes with old, faulty electrical wiring may not be able to handle the load of modern electrical appliances. In the event that the home has its original wiring, you will have to worry about spending a lot of money out of pocket to bring the electrical system up to code if you decide to purchase the house.
During the inspection period, it is in your best interest to have a home inspection and a separate roof inspection done. Major roof problems are often something that most buyers don't want to take on. If you find out that the roof on the home that you want to buy will need to be replaced, you may want to consider asking for concessions from the seller to help cover the cost. Don't be afraid to walk away if the seller won't work with you.
Living in a home with mold can be potentially dangerous for the health of humans and animals. The seller can have the mold cleaned and removed, but if the underlying issue causing the mold is not addressed, the mold will just grow back. Be wary of a home that has extensive mold damage.Share
